Is it Sunday afternoon already?!?!?

Why oh why do weekends go by so quickly?!?!? I mean the week leading up to it seems to drag by, but once you hit Friday night it goes by in a blur. Well as I mentioned in my Friday post I had to go get an x-ray of my foot to see if it's broken. There was good news and bad news. The good news is, it's not broken!!! Yay! The bad news? Years of cheerleading, dance, and 4 in. heels have led to some pretty ugly foot issues. My x-ray showed that I basically have worn down all the cartilage from my ankle through my foot. :( Even worse, it's not like cartilage just magically grows back, so it's permanent damage. So it looks like I'm going to have to start wearing flats a little more often. Oh well at least it gives me an excuse to shop! :) I'm trying to stay positive about the whole thing, but truth be told I'm really upset. I'm a very active person so my feet are important to me. I'm only 22, so it just seems insane that I'm dealing with a problem that most women don't deal with until they are MUCH older.

Saturday was definitely a better day though. Gabe and I got up and had brunch together at Starbucks. Yes all those breakfast sandwiches on their menu look delish, but I generally stick with the oatmeal and add the dried fruit. Especially if I'm splurging on a White Chocolate Mocha. After eating we drove around and looked at houses for about two hours. I have some interior design classes and my homework this weekend was to drive around and take pictures of 15 different styles of houses. It was alot of fun since we got to explore alot of the older neighborhoods that have some very interesting architecture. We grocery shopped in the afternoon and I studied for my upcoming Anatomy test. Saturday night we met some of Gabe's co workers at La Huerta for dinner and drinks and then went to watch Shutter Island. I have been dying to see this movie since I saw the first preview last summer. It lived up to its hype for me. It's one of those movies that you are literally in deep thought the entire time just trying to figure out what the heck is going on! It's definitely a movie I plan on buying when it comes out on DVD.

Today we got up pretty early and made breakfast together. After that I cleaned and caught up on our piled up laundry. I don't understand how two people go through so many clothes in just a week. It's beyond me. Since the weather is FINALLY starting to get nice, we went for a run and it was AMAZING! I have been dying to get out of the house for some sun and fresh air so today was much needed. Now Gabe's gone to play soccer with his co workers and I'm about to start studying for my Nutrition test I have tomorrow. I love this Nutrition class I'm taking this semester because it's centered around contemporary issues so we study supplements, popular fad diets, and the growing obesity epidemic. I wish nutrition courses were grouped in with gen eds because I really think that everyone could benefit from being a little more educated in this area.

Anyway, I hope everyone else had a lovely weekend!

Please meet Paula and her pretty Pink Bow!

Hello there, I hope you had a lovely weekend. Come on in and help yourself to some macaroons. Today we're chatting to Paula of Pink Bow!

British-born Paula lives in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England where she works in advertising. Her blog, Pink Bow, is a heavenly helping of all things pretty. It was tough trying to decide which of her photographs to include in this post for they are all amazing. Once I'd picked my faves, we had a good old girly chit chat about blogging, baking and picture-taking!

Hi Paula, your blog is beautiful. What inspired you to create this cute corner on the web?

Thank you! After reading other people’s blogs for a couple of years, they motivated to start my own. I had been an avid ‘scrapbooker’ for about 10 years, loving to collect images that inspired me. Initially, starting my own blog was a digital replacement for this and a creative output for my new photography hobby.

Photobucket

You’re clearly smitten with bows. Just how many of these lovelies do you own?

Around a dozen, not including clothing adornments. My favourites have to be three beautiful bows sent to me by a designer called Laurent Desgrange and also the little silver Tiffany bow necklace given to me by my parents this Christmas.

Photobucket

On Flickr, you say that photography is very new to you and yet your pictures are sensational. Would you mind telling us about the camera you use and why you chose it?

Thank you so much! Yes, I have been taking photographs for less than a year and have become quite obsessed with it. Flickr and my blog are great tools to keep me motivated. I’m very much self-taught but would love to attend a class to learn more.

I currently use a Canon EOS 1000d. This is the third Canon camera I have owned and when looking to buy a DSLR chose Canon again as I had always found them easy to use and good quality. I chose the model that suited my budget, maybe one day I will be able to upgrade to a better model.

Photobucket

Who takes the photos of you?

Most photographs are taken myself using a timer and remote. Occasionally I will enlist help from family or friends. I prefer to do it myself though as I feel quite self-conscious having my picture taken!

Photobucket

How would you describe your personal style?
I’m very inspired by French style so I guess it’s quite feminine and classic but I love quirky and funky details too. I generally just buy what catches my eye and then throw it all together!

Photobucket

You’ve dedicated a Flickr set to Chanel. When did your love affair with the French fashion house begin?

I have loved Chanel since I can remember. My dream for so many years was to own the Classic Handbag. When that dream became a reality last year I became even more Chanel-obsessed with cosmetics, books, films etc. So it seemed like a good idea to create a Flickr set which hopefully I will continue to add to.

Photobucket

If I were to visit London in the upcoming Spring, what ten pieces would you recommend I pack in my suitcase?

1. Ballet flats by French Sole – they have a huge amount of variety and you will be doing lots of walking around London

2. Cashmere cardigan or sweater – I currently have a couple from Autograph at M&S which are very affordable – to put on in the unpredictable English weather

3. Dress daytime – a wardrobe staple that can be dressed up or down

4. Dress evening – something a little more glamorous

5. Platform shoes or sandals – at least one pair of heels is necessary & these are the most current trend

6. Flared jeans – as much as I love the narrow proportions of skinny jeans, these are a great comfortable and chic alternative

7. Tee shirts – in a variety of colours and patterns

8. Floaty blouse – a dressy alternative to tee shirts to wear with jeans

9. Trench coat – another classic that can be worn day or night

10. A fabulous handbag – what screams style more than an eye-catching bag?

Photobucket

London Fashion Week has just wrapped. Do you have any favourite looks from the runway?

I loved the colour palette and textures of Charles Anastase, the black and gold glamour of PPQ. Mulberry had a quirky British element that I love and Roksanda Ilincic is an ongoing favourite, so chic.

Photobucket

If you could be dressed by any designer for a special date, who would you choose and what would you wear?

There are so many designers that I love…but my dream would have to be Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. Although I would not usually opt for one designer look head-to-toe, Chanel would be the exception. I would choose an amazing dress and jacket in one of the current SS10 pastel shades, along with a hair accessory, handbag and shoes. Or I would be happy for Karl himself to dress me in whichever way he thinks best. I’m swooning just thinking about it!

Photobucket

Please can you take us through your perfect day?

Funny you should ask me this question, as I have this planned for a post! I would begin the day with a lovely lie in and breakfast in bed. I would get up to visit my local flea-market where I would find lots of unusual treasures and then go on to meet a friend for brunch at my favourite café that makes the best smoked salmon & eggs, coffee & pastries. I would then return home for a little afternoon nap before getting ready in one of my most glamorous outfits for a night out with my boyfriend for cocktails, a film and more food. It would be a simple and relaxing day.

Photobucket

How are you planning to fill your weekends in the spring?

It seems like this has been the longest winter this year with all of the snow we’ve had. So I am now more than ready for the spring. I plan to explore more of the North East of England with my camera in hand. We have lovely countryside, coasts and gardens that really I am so lucky to have so close by, there is no shortage of beautiful places to visit. Also, last year my friends and I started to go to various gardens and parks with a picnic, so I hope to do more this year, weather permitting.

Photobucket

Where else can we find you on the web?

As well as my blog, I use Flickr and have recently had some outfit shots on Chicismo. I do have Lookbook.nu and Modepass accounts but rarely have the time to use them. I also use Twitter, great for boredom when travelling on the metro.

Your Valentine’s biscuits looked delicious! Could you please share one of your recipes with us?

I must confess to using The Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook lately for most of my recipe ideas. I visited the bakery in Portobello in London a couple of years ago and my friend then bought me the book. If you have a sweet-tooth it really is the best. (Hear Hear, Paula! I've been there too and it really is sublime) Here is one they are most famous for:

Red Velvet Cupcakes (makes 12)

12 hole cupcake tray, lined with paper cases

Ingredients:

60g unsalted butter, at room temperature
150g caster sugar
1 egg
20g cocoa powder
40ml red food colouring
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
120ml buttermilk
150g plain flour
½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 ½ teaspoons white vinegar
1 quantity Cream Cheese Frosting

Cream Cheese Ingredients:

300g icing sugar, sifted
50g unsalted butter, at room temperature
125g cream cheese, cold

Method for cupcakes:

Preheat the oven to 170℃ (325℉) Gas 3

Put the butter and the sugar in a freestanding electric mixer with a paddle attachment (or use a handheld electric whisk) and beat on medium speed until light and fluffy and well mixed. Turn the mixer up to high speed, slowly add the egg and beat until everything is incorporated.

In a separate bowl, mix together the cocoa powder, red food colouring and vanilla extract to make a very thick, dark paste. Add to the butter mixture and mix thoroughly until evenly combined and coloured (scrape any unmixed ingredients from the side of the bowl with a rubber spatula). Turn the mixer down to a slow speed and slowly pour in half of the buttermilk. Beat until well mixed, then add half the flour and beat until everything is well incorporated. Repeat this process until all the buttermilk and flour have been added. Scrape down the side of the bowl again. Turn the mixer up to high speed and beat until you have a smooth, even mixture. Turn the mixer down to low speed and add the bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Beat until well mixed, then turn up the speed again and beat for a couple more minutes.

Spoon the mixture into the paper cases until two-thirds full and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the sponge bounces back when touched. A skewer inserted in the centre should come out clean. Leave the cupcakes to cool slightly in the tray before turning out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

Method for Cream Cheese Frosting:

Beat the icing sugar and butter together in a freestanding electric mixer with a paddle attachment (or use a handheld whisk) on medium-slow speed until the mixture comes together and is well mixed. Add the cream cheese in one go and beat until it is completely incorporated. Turn the mixture up to medium-high speed. Continue beating until the frosting is light and fluffy, at least 5 minutes. Do not overbeat, as it can quickly become runny.

When the cupcakes are cold, spoon the Cream Cheese Frosting on top.

Yum! Thank you, Paula, for this delicious dose of inspiration. What do you think guys, isn't she a honey?! I'm a bona fide Pink Bow fangirl for sure:)

Looks we Love: Keri Hilson

What a lovely and elegant statment Keri made at the NAACP Image Awards this past Friday.  We love the tousled waves and her longer tresses.

A Word on Brazilian Hair and Malaysian Hair Extensions

It simply does not exist.  90% of the hair on the market is either Indian or Asian hair.  Most Brazilian hair is Curly Indian Hair that has been purchased from India by Brazilians and marketed and resold as Brazilian Hair.

So if you are looking for Brazilian Hair...I'd recommend trying out Sunny's Indian Natural Curl.  Visit your local store and ask to see the curliest bundles of Indian Hair and if you want to call it Brazilian hair...it'll be a secret amongst friends.

The same applies to Malaysian hair...it is usually Indian Hair blended with Chinese hair to give a sleeker and straighter feel to the hair.   If you are looking for straighter or sleeker Indian Hair we'd recommend Double Drawn Natural Straight Indian Hair.

At Sunny's we don't believe a little creative marketing is wrong...but we draw the line at misleading our Sunny's Girls.

Be inspired on Monday. Win on Wednesday!

Hello, I hope you are having a lovely Saturday. Hopefully Monday doesn't come too soon but when it does, pop in for a cuppa and a catch up with one of my new favourite bloggers! Her blog is beautiful and her photographs will have you lusting for pink macaroons and Polka Dot dresses. She's such a sweetheart and I know you're going to love her. And, don't forget you can still enter the first Glossary Giveaway! I've got a super SA cookbook just waiting to be parcelled up in pink paper and posted to one of you. All you need to do is comment on this post to stand  a chance of winning. Simple, non?! I also made a new set on Polyvore. How I wish I could wear short denim shorts. *Sigh* Are you playing on Polyvore as well? Isn't it just awesome!? Let me know if you are so I can add you as a friend. x

Random Friday Thoughts

1. My class was cancelled today and I didn't have anything due in my online classes so my weekend got started early! I've enjoyed a relaxing day of sleeping in (till 8:30 since this is now considered sleeping in for me), working out, cleaning my apartment, watching daytime tv :), and actually getting to sit down and eat a normal lunch. Since I'm usually in class during lunch time I usually just eat a snack that I can put in my bag.

2. I'm going to get my foot x-rayed today to see if it's broken. Yes I said broken and yes I'm still working out. I'm a woman obsessed I can't help it! Of course I've been taking it easy this week and I haven't worn heels once. I have no clue what I did to my poor foot, but what I do know is it hurts and it's really uncomfortable. Good thing my bf's dad can give me an x-ray at his office for free! :)

3. Since we're having to go to Heber tonight for the x-ray, date night is postponed until tommorow. I'm not sure what we're doing yet, but I can't wait! Date nights my favorite night of the week!

4. It's still freezing cold here and Spring fever has kicked in full force. I just keep dreaming about colorful, pretty clothes and being able to spend time out doors! February is coming to an end and still no warm weather in sight! What's going on here?!?!

That's really all I have today. Sorry this is such a boring post. I'm having a case of bloggers block today. Have a good weekend ya'll!

A-Line Skirt + Body Suit = Wardrobe Sanity

Aloha! How are you today? I’m fine but I feel like I have nothing to wear. Ever. I do have clothes but hardly any of them can be pulled together in a coherent manner. Nightmare.

So I’ve been pouring over outfit posts by my favourite fashion bloggers to see if I can learn some lessons from what they’re wearing.  Having done that, I think I now know the cause of my wardrobe calamity – a mega lack of easy-to-wear essentials.

While I have the black pants, the denim jacket, white tee and boyfriend blazer, I remain in desperate need of skirts and duh, duh, duh – the body suit! Yes, that bizarre looking number from the 80’s should be my friend. Many of my best-loved bloggers pair A-Line skirts with body suits and it's such a cute look. In summer, you can wear it with bare legs and in winter, you can warm it up with tights. Plus, mixing and matching block colours with prints is probably something even I can manage. Nice!

The reason this combo appeals to me so much is because I really struggle to find clothes that flatter my shape which is of the dreaded pear variety. I seem to live in denim pencil skirts with tees and I’m SO bored of this. I think one of the reasons we had A-line skirts as part of our school uniform was because not only are they practical but flattering as well. Team one with a body suit that sucks you in and smoothes out any bumps and you’re good to go.

Alrighty, let’s get dressed already!  Well, not me I’m afraid. I can't find any cute A-line skirts or body suits in our local shops and yet the European chains are stocked to the brim with them. All the time. Tucking in a tightish tee is no good either. It wriggles up and who needs that. Not me, I tells ya.

So until I find some skirts, I think I’m going to ask my mom to sew me some. *Hi mom, please. Hee. I'll ring you later. Love you*  A friend of mine is coming down from the UK in March so perhaps I can ask her to bring me a body suit or two.*Hi Kath! I'll email you. Mwah.* Body suit is a funny name. It’s not much of a suit is it? If you see any in the shops, please let me know! Or if you can sew me a skirt, that would be awesome as well. You’ll bring order to my wardrobe and that is a truly noble deed. Here are some skirts and body suits I found on Polyvore. What do you think of this look? Would you wear any of these? x

These are a few of my favorite things! (make-up edition)

Today I've decided to share with ya'll some of my favorite make-up products. I'm a total beauty junkie, and I have drawers and drawers full of stuff. But if I had to pick only five products to take with me to a desert island, this is what would be in my bag:

1. NARS Bronzer in Laguna. This picture makes it look orange but its actually the most flattering shade of brown with a light shimmer. I can use it year round and it's not too harsh. Love it!

2. Merle Norman Ultra Powder. I used to work at a Merle Norman so I got hooked on this pressed powder. It's perfect. It has great coverage and it stays on all day. I use it in Ultra Amber.

3. L'oreal HIP eye shadow duo in Gilded. I love these eye shadows because unlike most drugstore brands they actually have alot of pigment in them and have some really fun color choices. If you like MAC eye shadows, you should try these.

4. Benefit Bad Gal Lash. My mom actually got me hooked on this mascara. We both have sensitive eyes and have to be careful about what we use. I had been using Christian Dior DiorShow for years but it was starting to bother my eye's. This stuff makes my short blonde lashes look like I'm wearing false eyelashes. I never leave home with out it!

5. Last but certainly not least we have a classic. NARS blush in Orgasm. I swear this peachy pink color looks good on EVERYBODY. My little sister who has fair skin and dark hair and eyes looks great in it. I have blonde hair, medium tan skin, and blue eyes and it more than works for me. I've been using this for a little over a year and I don't think I will ever use anything else. If you only get one thing off this list, get this blush. Amazing!
Well that's all for me today! Have a wonderful afternoon!

Letters we passed between books in school

So I'm pretty sentimental. I have a great big box filled with every card I've ever been given. My mom started saving them for me when I was a kid and since then, I've kept 'em all. I can't imagine throwing a card away.  I also have boxes of letters from my school days. Remember how we used to sneak them to each other between books and pass them to each other in the hallway?  Ah yes, those were the days before Facebook and Twitter. Heck, we didn't even have cell phones until matric if I remember correctly? Most of my besties are scattered all around the world now and my heart pines for them. When we see each other, it's as if not a day has gone by and it truly is one of the best feelings in the world. Sometimes when I've had a bad day or I haven't been able to catch up with one of them, I dive into my box of letters and have a good laugh at our epic teenage dramas!

No names mentioned of course but here are some excerpts from the Exam Pad letters I will cherish forever:

LaLa, nothings wrong but I'm hot and bothered and worried 4 the 50000000 pages of BE we have to learn. This class sux. Thanks anyway Lala!

Lorr-in, D phoned me last night and he's going to give me one of his tapes that he's mixed himself.  I love D. I gotta go cuz Pieters is trying to read this.

2 Lala, Thanx for the letter. I agree that we need to sort our love lives out.

La, I'm in history with the yelling pyscho. geeeez! I'm glad you're going to gym today, I think I'm going to try the super circuit. It's been a while buddy.

Hi, I just want you to know that I am always here for you, if you need anything, call me, whenever.

I don't understand why everyone is so bitchy. I guess it happens in all girls' schools. But the thing that you have to remember is not to take any notice if it.

I have LOTS of scoops. Won't tell you now...no time...as the bell is going to go. I went to movies and coffee with him..it was so great

I'm looking forward to tomorrow night but I am panicking. AHHHHH!!

J is so evil but I guess I still like him. This class is full of blairs. Well I have no scoops!

To Lorr-in, hey, guess what. I just got shat on by a teacher and it has ruined my whole day.

I'll give you more scoops later. I hate writing scoops. This woman is so irritating. But yes, we'll speak.

Well I'm in the crud. Speaking of which, you owe me some scoops. Hehe. Bye bye beavis.

L.O.L We sure were into 'the scoops' back then. Little terrors we all were. Haha. Love you guys. x

New Obsession!

This will be a short post because I'm buried in homework. But I just had to share my latest obsession with ya'll.
It's METROMINT Water.

This stuff is delicious! I pretty much only drink water or tea so I'm always looking for ways to spice those drinks up a bit. I've done the lemon water to death and I don't really like those fruit flavored waters. So I was pretty stoked to find this in the natural foods section at Kroger. I love mint tea so I figured why not! Oh and it's calorie and sugar free! Wonderful! I'm in LOVE with the Spearmint flavor and....

The Chocolate Mint flavor. Yep... chocolate mint water. Sounds disgusting I know. But don't knock it till you try it! It actually helps curb my sugar cravings. I'm a total chocoholic and I have to be careful not to eat an entire bag of cookies after a meal. (because I can, trust me) Anyway next time ya'll are at the grocery store you should pick some up and try it! Enjoy!

Summer hairstyle inspirations! Click the photos for their original sources - thank you kind people of flickr for the endless amounts of inspiration you've shared. I made a little gallery featuring more summer hair-dos to inspire. I've also been keeping a tumblr (late on this bandwagon) account to fill with various photographic inspirations here.

I answered a few questions that were asked in my last post here. Thank you for all your kind comments! Also like to thank the lovely ladies over at BALLAD OF for their kind comments and featuring this blog amongst such a great lot of inspiration. Check out their magazine and contribute to their next issue!

One last thing before I get back to working on getting future Ebay store sorted (will keep you abreast of any news regarding the shop). A few months ago (thanksgiving day to be exact) Landon, Rebecca and I were at Whole Foods in Union Square and a beautiful girl in a brown dress approached us and confessed to reading this blog. Are you still reading this blog beautiful brown dress girl? Cos if you are I'd like to be your friend. Landon was harassing me to approach you for a number (I feel like such a creep as lately Landon has been trying to set me up on dates and nudging me towards young ladies at our local watering hole) but I was too shy. So, if you happen to read this rather belated missed connection leave me a comment and let's have a date!

I love the Arctic Monkeys and I have a stripy top. Yes! Last week I was nattering on about wanting a white stripy top with 3/4 length sleevs. Well, while I was rummaging through Nadia's stripy's on Saturday, she tells me that Pick and Pay have a whole bunch of 'em. Um, awesome. So Sunday saw me buying eggs, dip, cereal and a 1990's style top. At Pick 'n Pay. Cheers for the tip-off Nads!
